Brief Summary
Han-Byoel Lee, MD, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery at Seoul National University College of Medicine. Dr. Lee is also affiliated with the Cancer Research Institute at Seoul National University and the Biomedical Research Institute at Seoul National University Hospital. He majored in Biological Science at KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) and received his medical degree and PhD from Seoul National University. He trained as a resident in Surgery and as a clinical fellow in Breast Surgery at Seoul National University Hospital.
Dr. Lee’s clinical research involves the de-escalation and optimization of surgery and oncoplastic surgery for breast cancer. He is the principal investigator of the multicenter, prospective OPTIMIST trial, which investigates the omission of breast surgery for exceptional responders to neoadjuvant systemic therapy, and is actively participating in over 20 prospective studies in Korea and internationally.
Dr. Lee’s translational research involves the development of genomic assays and tools. He has developed the NGS-based multigene gene expression assay for HR+/HER2- breast cancer (OncoFREE). He is also one of the main investigators of the SLACS (Spatially-resolved Laser Activated Cell Sorting) technique used for spatial genomics/transcriptomics analyses.
His research focuses on translating scientific discoveries into clinically impactful diagnostic and therapeutic technologies. He welcomes collaborative research opportunities with academic investigators, clinicians, and industry partners who share a common interest in advancing precision medicine.
