Overview

Purpose

The purpose is to periodically assess the health of laboratory animals so that their quality is suitable for the research objectives, to minimize the impact of environmental factors on the animals and thereby derive reliable and reproducible experimental results, and to respond promptly when abnormalities occur in the animals' husbandry environment or health condition, minimizing the effect on experimental outcomes.

Classification

  • Microbiological management of laboratory animals
  • Environmental management of the laboratory animal facility
  • Microbiological testing of drinking water, feed, and bedding

Microbiological Management of Laboratory Animals

Operating Principles

  • As a rule, testing is conducted regularly once per quarter per room, for a total of 4 times per year, and may be conducted irregularly when disease occurs in the laboratory animals.
  • Rodents, Guinea pigs, and Rabbits are tested regularly, while medium and large animals are tested for specified items during acceptance inspection and quarantine.
  • When animals are introduced from a production facility not under contract with Seoul National University Hospital or from an external research facility, an SPF certification must be attached.
  • Even if an SPF certification is provided, additional testing is conducted when the tested items are insufficient, in which case the researcher pays the fee.
