Hazardous Chemical Safety Management

When conducting animal experiments using hazardous chemicals (carcinogens, reproductive toxicants, other highly toxic substances, etc.), experimental procedures must be established to control potential exposure and ensure safety.

When preparing an animal experiment protocol, please refer to the general guideline SOP as well as the Streptozotocin SOP for a representative hazardous chemical (to be used as a sample when preparing an individual SOP for a hazardous chemical), respectively.

Animal Experiment Protocol Preparation and the Safety & Health Manager's Review Procedure

   Establishing an Individual SOP and Training Researchers

   The Principal Investigator establishes an individual SOP for the hazardous chemical. At this stage, information on the Animal Metabolism of the Chemicals is collected from the MSDS and related literature, and after review, training is provided to the researchers.

   Preparing the Animal Experiment Protocol and IACUC Review

   The relevant information must be described within the animal experiment protocol, and the IACUC review is then conducted.

   Review and Training by the Safety & Health Manager

   Before proceeding with the animal experiment, you must contact the Safety & Health Manager of the Department of Experimental Animal Research (ext. 0814), provide copies of the SOP, MSDS, or other hazard information, and receive review and training.

Considerations Based on the Individual SOP for the Handled Substance

   For safety, use a BSC (Biological Safety Cabinet) when administering substances and when opening or changing cages.

   Wear PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), including an N95 mask, double gloves, and goggles.

3. 3

   Measures such as recording administration, labeling cages with the hazardous chemical, and recording the administration date are required.
